Quick-Start Guide
π‘ Why visual routines work
A visual schedule moves the instructions from your voice to the wall. The child checks the pictures instead of being told (again) β which means fewer battles, less nagging, and a growing sense of "I did it myself". For autistic and ADHD children, seeing the plan also lowers anxiety about what's coming next.
π Setting up
Laminate the schedules and stick them where the routine happens: morning chart by the bedroom door, toothbrushing card by the sink, bedtime chart on the wardrobe. Use a dry-wipe pen for the tick boxes so they reset every day.
π£οΈ Using them
Point, don't nag: "check your chart β what's next?" Praise the checking itself ("you looked at your chart all by yourself!"). Keep the routine the SAME every day for at least two weeks β consistency is what turns it into autopilot.
π Now / Next board
For children who find whole schedules overwhelming, start with just the Now/Next board: one picture in each box. It's the single most powerful transition tool in SEND classrooms β it works just as well at home.
π When it wobbles
Hard days happen. Shrink the routine (three steps, not seven), do the steps together, and let the chart take the blame β "oh no, the chart says teeth next!" keeps you on the same team as your child.

4πTop β head first, then arms

π‘ Tricky bits? Practise buttons and zips at the weekend when there's no rush β on a teddy first if that's easier!

Now / Next Board
π Laminate me! Draw, write or velcro a picture in each box. "NOW we do thisβ¦ NEXT we do that." One step at a time is plenty.
π‘ Put something tricky in NOW and something lovely in NEXT β "Now teeth β‘οΈ next story" works better than any amount of persuading.

π Grown-up note
Reward effort, not perfection β 5 ticks out of 7 is a winning week. The best rewards are time-together ones: a park trip, a film night, choosing dinner.
