PawSteps Β· For Grown-Ups
My Happy Brain β Facilitator Notes
For school counsellors, therapists, social workers, teachers and homeschool families working on social-emotional learning.
π‘ How to use it
Give each child a copy and coloured pencils. Read each section aloud and give thinking time before writing β younger children or emerging writers can draw their answers instead. There are no wrong answers; the goal is noticing what fills their brain with happiness.
π£οΈ Talk prompts per section
Things I Love β "How does your body feel when you're with that thing?" Β·
People Who Make Me Smile β "What do they do that helps you feel safe?" Β·
Happy Places β "Can you picture it? What can you see and hear there?" Β·
My Superpowers β steer towards character strengths (kindness, trying again) not just skills Β·
Favourite Memories β "Who was with you? Could you plan to do it again?" Β·
Dreams & Wishes β big or small, silly or serious, all welcome.
π― When to use it
End-of-year reflection Β· summer counselling packets Β· back-to-school SEL lessons Β· new-student check-ins Β· after a wobbly week as a positivity reset Β· alongside the PawSteps Feelings Weather Check-In (map the happy brain on a "sunny" day, revisit it on a "rainy" one).
π Extension ideas
Share one section with a partner ("share your happy brain with someone you love") Β· turn "My Superpowers" into a class strengths wall Β· revisit the sheet each term and add new items in a different colour to show growth Β· for reluctant writers, cut out magazine pictures and glue them into the sections.
π§ Why it works
Naming sources of joy, strengths and gratitude builds self-awareness and emotional vocabulary β and framing it inside "your brain" gently teaches that thoughts and feelings live somewhere we can notice and influence. Non-threatening by design: it only asks for positives.
