How to Read a Symbol Story
๐ก Why symbols?
Symbol-supported text lets children access a real story before they can read the words. The picture carries the meaning, the printed word sits underneath it, and over time the two glue together. It also gives non-speaking children a way to "read aloud" โ by pointing.
๐ Reading together
Read slowly, pointing to each symbol as you say the word. Pause at the repeated lines ("I'll huff and I'll puffโฆ") and let the child join in โ with voice, sign, gesture or a big dramatic ๐จ blow! Repetition is the point: this book is designed to be read many, many times.
๐ Before the story
Print and cut the vocabulary board (after the story pages). Introduce the symbols first: name them, act them out, find them on the page. Children follow stories far better when the words are friends, not strangers.
โ๏ธ Make it interactive
Laminate a second copy of the vocabulary cards and add velcro โ children can match cards to the symbols on each page as you read, or hand you "who comes next?".
๐ Grey words
Little grey cells (the, a, ofโฆ) are glue words โ they have no symbol on purpose. Point and read them quickly; the bold symbol cells carry the story.
