The price on the tag is almost never the real cost. The kindest thing you can do for an animal — and your budget — is to work out the full picture before you bring one home.
Setup vs ongoing
Every pet has a one-off setup cost (housing, heating/lighting, equipment) and an ongoing cost (food, bedding, supplements, replacements). For many small animals the setup dwarfs the animal itself — a bearded dragon might be £40, but its vivarium, UVB and heating can be £300+.
The costs people forget
- Vet care — routine and emergency; exotics vets can be pricier.
- Insurance — worth it for cats and dogs especially.
- Holiday and cover care — boarding or a sitter.
- Replacements — UVB tubes, filters and bulbs wear out on a schedule.
A quick reality check
Over a lifetime, a "cheap" small pet can still run into four figures, and a dog into many thousands. That's not a reason not to — it's a reason to plan.
