Using animals to support SEND and wellbeing
For many children with SEND, animals offer something people sometimes can't: connection without pressure, and a calm, predictable focus. Used thoughtfully, animal-based activities can support regulation, communication and confidence.
Why it helps
- Regulation — stroking, watching or breathing alongside a calm animal soothes the nervous system.
- Routine and responsibility — a simple, repeatable care task builds ownership and rhythm.
- Communication — children often talk more freely to, or beside, an animal than face to face.
- Motivation — an animal theme makes a tricky activity feel safe and inviting.
Doing it safely and inclusively
- Sensory-aware — offer, never force, contact; watch for overwhelm.
- Consent and choice — the child's and the animal's; both can opt out.
- Hygiene and welfare — handwashing, gentle handling, and a quiet retreat for the animal.
You don't need a real animal to start.
