How a cat's senses work

Cats are superb hunters and explorers, and the reason is their senses. A sense is the way an animal collects information about the world — light, sound, smell, taste and touch — and turns it into signals that travel to the brain. The brain then makes sense of those signals, so the cat can decide what to do. In this lesson we look at the five main senses one at a time, and at the body part (the organ) that does each job.

👁️ Eyes — sight

Sight is one of a cat's best-developed senses. Their eyes let them see shapes, colour and light. When light bounces off an object and enters the eye, the eye passes signals along to the brain, which builds them into an image the cat can understand. Cats are slightly short-sighted, so faraway things look a little blurry, but for spotting movement close by they are excellent.

Light travels through the eye in stages, and each part has a job:

Cats also have some clever extra features. Behind the retina is a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum, which bounces light back through the eye to boost night vision — it is why a cat's eyes seem to glow in the dark. Their field of view is around 200 degrees, wider than a human's, so they notice movement to the side. A third eyelid sweeps across to keep the eye moist and protected. Their slit-shaped pupils help control light, judge depth and stay hidden as ambush predators. Cats have limited colour vision, seeing mainly blues and greens rather than the full range humans see. Finally, the pupils can dilate (grow larger) both to let in more light and when the cat is feeling strong emotions such as excitement or fear.

👂 Ears — hearing

A cat's ear does two important jobs: it hears sound and it helps with balance. The ear has three parts — outer, middle and inner — and sound passes through them in order.

From the inner ear, the auditory nerve carries the signals to the brain, which turns them into the sounds the cat hears. A cat's ears do more than listen, too: their position is a clear signal of mood. Ears facing forward usually mean a happy, curious cat; flattened sideways or back can mean the cat is scared or about to be aggressive.

👃 Nose — smell

Smell is one of a cat's most powerful senses — roughly 14 times better than a human's. This is because a cat's nose contains over 200 million scent receptors, the tiny detectors that pick up smells, compared with far fewer in people. Smell helps a cat find food, recognise other animals and read messages left in its territory.

The nose has some special names worth knowing. The hairless outer part is the nose leather (its proper name is the planum). The two nostrils are called the nares. The little split running down the middle below the nose is the philtrum; it draws moisture up to keep the nose leather damp, and a damp nose holds on to scent particles for longer so smells linger. Cats also have an extra smell tool called the Jacobson's organ (or vomeronasal organ) in the roof of the mouth. It detects extra chemical information and pheromones — special scent messages between animals — and sends those signals to the brain.

👅 Mouth — taste

Taste is actually one of a cat's weaker senses. Humans have around 9,000 taste buds, but a cat has only about 473, and cats cannot taste "sweet" at all. Their taste receptors still send useful signals to the brain about whether food is good to eat. The Jacobson's organ helps here as well, letting a cat "taste" aromas by combining smell and taste together.

A cat's tongue is a tool in its own right. It is covered in tiny backward-facing spikes called papillae. These act like a comb during grooming, lifting away dust, loose hair and debris, and they also help the cat spread saliva to regulate its body temperature.

🐾 Skin — touch

Skin is a cat's largest organ. It works as a protective barrier against the outside world, helps regulate body temperature, and provides the sense of touch. Skin has two main layers:

The paw pads are soft but tough, cushioned by a layer of fatty tissue. Unlike humans, cats barely sweat through their skin; they mainly sweat only from a few hairless areas such as the paws, lips and chin. Spread across the body — and especially in the paws and whiskers — are tactile receptors, tiny sensors that detect touch. They are so sensitive that even a small gust of air can trigger them, which helps a cat feel its way around in the dark.
