Betty is a bearded dragon — a kind of lizard, which is a reptile. Her skin is covered in dry scales (not slimy!). Betty loves to be warm, so she sits under a warm light to soak up the heat. We call this basking, like sunbathing. When she is warm she has lots of energy to move around.

A bearded dragon is cold-blooded (an ectotherm). This does not mean its blood is cold — it means it cannot make its own body heat like we do. Instead it must take heat from its surroundings. In the wild it basks on warm rocks in the sun; if it gets too hot, it moves to the shade. This moving between warm and cool to control body temperature is called thermoregulation. Its sandy-brown colour is camouflage, helping it hide from predators in the desert. A bearded dragon is a consumer in a food chain:

The bearded dragon is a vertebrate in the class Reptilia: it has dry scales, breathes air with lungs, lays eggs (usually buried in warm sand), and is an ectotherm. Compare that with an endotherm like a mammal or bird, which makes its own heat from food. Being an ectotherm has a big advantage: because it isn’t “burning” food to stay warm, a bearded dragon needs far less food than a similar-sized mammal — useful in a harsh desert where food is scarce. The trade-off is that it becomes sluggish when cold and depends on the environment for warmth.

Ectotherms regulate body temperature mainly through behaviour: basking to absorb radiant heat, flattening the body and orienting toward the sun to increase surface area, moving to shade or burrows to cool, and changing skin shade (darker absorbs more heat). Because they don’t expend energy maintaining a constant internal temperature, ectotherms transfer a greater proportion of their food energy into growth, and can survive on less food than endotherms of similar mass — a clear adaptation to arid, low-resource habitats. The cost is dependence on external conditions and reduced activity when cold.

Betty needs to be warm, so she has a special heat lamp. She needs a bright light that helps keep her bones strong, clean water, and food — bugs and leaves. We hold her gently and always wash our hands afterwards.

A bearded dragon needs: a large vivarium with a warm end and a cool end, a heat lamp, a special UVB light, fresh water, and a mix of insects and vegetables. A dangerous myth is that “a reptile only needs a small tank and a heat mat.” Without proper UVB light, a bearded dragon cannot use calcium and develops painful bone disease. Another myth is that they are “easy, cheap starter pets” — in fact the equipment and care are a real responsibility.

Keeping a bearded dragon well means recreating a slice of desert indoors:
UVB lets the dragon make vitamin D and use calcium. Without it, calcium can’t be absorbed properly, leading to weak bones and metabolic bone disease.
Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, owners must meet an animal’s five welfare needs. For a bearded dragon this is demanding and equipment-dependent: a suitable environment (correct heat gradient, UVB, humidity, space); a suitable diet (varied insects and plants with calcium supplementation); the ability to show normal behaviour (basking, digging, hiding); appropriate housing (usually kept singly, as adults can be territorial); and protection from disease (preventing metabolic bone disease, and access to a reptile vet). Because so many are surrendered when owners underestimate the cost and care, rehoming from a reptile rescue is often the responsible route.
