How Animals Have Babies

Animals bring their babies into the world in three main ways. Learn them first, then try the quiz!

1. Egg-layers

These animals lay eggs, and the baby grows and hatches outside the mother's body. Most birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians and insects are egg-layers.

2. Live-bearers (most mammals)

The baby grows inside the mother and is born alive. The mother then feeds it on milk. Most mammals do this — including us!

3. Marsupials

A special group of mammals. The baby is born very tiny and finishes growing safely in the mother's pouch. Most marsupials live in Australia.
