Food Chains with Gary

Hello — I'm Gary, and I really am a hedgehog at Pets on the Green. Today we'll work out who eats what in my garden, and where all that energy comes from in the first place.

What you'll do: build a food chain, work out each animal's job, and answer my questions. Take as long as you like. There's no timer and nothing to get wrong.

Where does the energy start?

Every food chain begins with the Sun. Green plants use sunlight to make their own food, so we call them producers. Animals can't make their own food — they have to eat. They're consumers.

A hedgehog eats slugs and beetles. So am I a producer, or a consumer?

A consumer. I can't make my own food, so I have to go and find it.
