It is not veterinary training. Nothing here qualifies anyone to diagnose, prescribe or treat. Where clinical judgement is required, the answer is always a vet.

Unit 1 — Animal Anatomy and Physiology
Learning outcomes
- Describe the structure and function of the major body systems.
- Compare these systems across vertebrate classes and explain the differences.
- Explain thermoregulation in endotherms and ectotherms.
- Relate anatomical structure to husbandry requirements.
Knowledge content
Skeletal and muscular systems. Support, protection, movement and mineral storage. Comparative points that matter in practice: avian skeletons are lightweight with pneumatised bones; chelonian shells are fused to the skeleton and cannot be separated from the animal; many lizards autotomise the tail at a fracture plane, which is why tails are never grasped.
Respiratory systems. Mammalian lungs with a diaphragm; avian lungs with air sacs producing unidirectional flow and far greater efficiency; reptilian lungs without a diaphragm, ventilated by body wall movement; amphibian cutaneous respiration alongside lungs; fish gills.
The husbandry consequences are direct. A bird's respiratory efficiency makes it acutely vulnerable to airborne toxins — this is the mechanism behind canaries in mines, and it is why non-stick cookware fumes kill pet birds. Restraining a bird around the chest prevents breathing, because it has no diaphragm to work against you.
Digestive systems. Herbivore adaptations including hindgut fermentation and caecotrophy in rabbits, where caecotrophs are re-ingested and are nutritionally essential rather than a habit to prevent. Carnivore short simple guts. Avian crop, proventriculus and gizzard. Reptilian digestion is temperature-dependent — a reptile fed and then kept too cool cannot digest, and the food putrefies inside it.
Circulatory systems. Mammalian and avian four-chambered hearts with fully separated circulation; most reptiles have three chambers with partial separation; amphibians three; fish two.
Thermoregulation.
- Endotherms generate heat metabolically and maintain a stable internal temperature. This is metabolically expensive, which is why endotherms eat far more for their size.
- Ectotherms obtain heat from the environment and regulate behaviourally by moving between temperatures. This is efficient — a snake can go weeks between meals — but it makes the animal entirely dependent on the environment the keeper provides.
Integument. Mammalian hair and glands; avian feathers; reptilian keratinised scales shed periodically; amphibian permeable glandular skin used for respiration and water uptake; invertebrate exoskeleton requiring moulting for growth, a process during which the animal is soft and highly vulnerable.
Practical task
Choose three species from different classes. Produce a comparison of their respiratory, digestive and thermoregulatory systems, and state one husbandry requirement that follows directly from each difference.
Evidence task
Write a technical account explaining why a single husbandry error — incorrect temperature, restricted chest, wrong humidity — produces the physiological consequences it does. Reference the relevant body system throughout.
Unit 2 — Animal Behaviour
Learning outcomes
- Distinguish innate from learned behaviour.
- Explain the main principles of learning theory and apply them.
- Interpret behavioural signals across species.
- Identify abnormal behaviour and explain its causes.
Knowledge content
Innate and learned. Innate behaviour is present without experience — reflexes, fixed action patterns, instinctive responses. Learned behaviour is acquired. Most real behaviour is both: an innate predisposition shaped by experience.
Learning theory.
- Habituation — a reduced response to a repeated harmless stimulus. This is what acclimatisation to handling actually is.
- Classical conditioning — association between two stimuli. An animal that comes to the front when it hears a container has been classically conditioned.
- Operant conditioning — behaviour shaped by consequence. Positive reinforcement adds something desirable; negative reinforcement removes something aversive; punishment suppresses behaviour.
Why reinforcement is preferred over punishment. Punishment suppresses a behaviour without teaching an alternative, produces fear, damages the animal's relationship with the handler, and frequently increases the underlying problem. It also fails to address cause. Positive reinforcement builds a behaviour and is the standard in modern animal training.
Communication and signals. Species-specific and must be learned individually:
- Chameleon colour as a signal of temperature, stress and display, not camouflage.
- Hedgehog balling, huffing and spine erection as escalating defensive signals.
- Psittacine feather position, pupil pinning and posture.
- Reptilian gaping, hissing, tail movement and flattening.
- Prey species freezing, which is easily mistaken for calm and is often the opposite.
Abnormal behaviour. Stereotypies — repetitive, invariant behaviour with no obvious function, such as pacing, route-tracing, bar-biting or over-grooming. These indicate a welfare problem, usually an environment that does not allow normal behaviour. The correct response is to change the environment, not to interrupt the behaviour.
Enrichment as behavioural management. Enrichment provides outlets for species-typical behaviour: foraging, climbing, digging, hiding, manipulating. It is assessed by whether the animal's behaviour changes, not by whether the enrichment looks good.
Practical task
Observe one animal for a set period and record behaviour at fixed intervals. Produce an ethogram — a list of defined behaviours — and a record of frequency.
Evidence task
Write a behaviour case study: describe an observed behaviour, analyse its likely cause using learning theory, and propose a management plan based on environmental change and positive reinforcement. State how you would evaluate whether it worked.
Unit 3 — Animal Welfare, Ethics and Legislation

- Apply an ethical framework to a real dilemma.
- Explain the principal legislation governing animal keeping in the UK.
- Explain licensing, inspection and enforcement.
Knowledge content
Welfare frameworks.
- The Five Freedoms — freedom from hunger and thirst; discomfort; pain, injury and disease; fear and distress; and freedom to express normal behaviour. Influential, and now criticised for framing welfare as the absence of negatives.
- The Five Domains — nutrition, environment, health, behaviour and mental state. Extends beyond avoiding harm to include positive experience. Increasingly the standard.
- Sentience. The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022 formally recognises vertebrates, and also cephalopods and decapod crustaceans, as sentient beings whose welfare must be considered in policy.
Ethical frameworks. Utilitarian approaches weigh overall welfare consequences. Rights-based approaches hold that certain treatment is impermissible regardless of benefit. Most real decisions in animal management involve both, and reasonable practitioners disagree.
Applying it. Real dilemmas do not have clean answers: keeping wild-type species in captivity at all; breeding for appearance; euthanasia decisions; using animals in public-facing sessions; selling to a buyer you have doubts about. The professional skill is reasoning transparently rather than reaching a comfortable conclusion.
Principal legislation.
- Animal Welfare Act 2006 — the duty of care and the five welfare needs. Offences of causing unnecessary suffering and of failing to meet needs.
- Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 — licensing of selling pets, boarding, hiring horses, dog breeding, and keeping or training animals for exhibition. Administered and inspected by the local authority, with a star rating system.
- Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 — species requiring a specific licence.
- Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 — protection of wild species, and restrictions on release of non-natives.
- CITES — international trade controls on listed species, with documentation requirements.
- Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022.
Licensing in practice. A setting offering animal handling experiences to the public requires an Animal Activities Licence from its local authority, is inspected, and must hold public liability insurance. Records, risk assessments and welfare procedures are examined at inspection.
Practical task
Take one real dilemma — for example whether to sell an animal to a buyer whose setup you doubt. Analyse it using both a utilitarian and a rights-based frame, and state your reasoned position.
Evidence task
Produce a compliance summary for a hypothetical setting: which licences and insurance are required, which legislation applies, what records must be kept, and what an inspector would expect to see.
Unit 4 — Breeding and Reproduction
Learning outcomes
- Describe reproductive strategies across species groups.
- Explain responsible breeding practice and its ethical basis.
- Describe care of a pregnant or gravid animal and of neonates.
- Explain the genetic principles relevant to breeding.
Knowledge content
Reproductive strategies. Viviparity, oviparity and ovoviviparity. Seasonal versus continuous breeding. Induced versus spontaneous ovulation. Temperature-dependent sex determination in many reptile species, where incubation temperature determines the sex of the offspring.
Genetics. Dominant and recessive inheritance; carriers; the consequences of inbreeding — reduced fitness, expression of deleterious recessives, reduced genetic diversity. Morph breeding in reptiles is genetically driven and some morphs are linked to serious welfare problems, of which spider morph royal pythons and their neurological wobble are the most discussed example.
Responsible breeding. Breeding only from healthy, mature, unrelated stock of known origin. Not breeding to a market that does not exist. Screening for known hereditary conditions. Not breeding combinations known to produce welfare problems, however saleable. Being prepared to keep or place every offspring, for their whole life.
Care of the pregnant or gravid animal. Increased nutritional requirement, particularly calcium. Reduced handling. Appropriate nesting or laying site — the absence of a suitable laying site causes egg binding in reptiles, which is life-threatening. Monitoring without disturbance.
Neonatal care. Thermoregulation, since neonates of most species cannot regulate independently. Feeding frequency. Recognising failure to thrive. Hand-rearing where necessary, and knowing that hand-reared animals may have altered behaviour towards humans and towards their own species.
Record keeping. Parentage, dates, clutch or litter size, weights, health, and where each animal went. Required for licensed breeders and good practice for everyone.
Practical task
Produce a breeding plan for one species: selection criteria, pairing rationale, housing, nutrition, expected timeline, neonatal provision, and your plan for every offspring including those not sold.
Evidence task
Write an analysis of a morph or line-breeding practice in one species, covering the genetics involved, the welfare implications, and your reasoned position on whether it should be practised.
Unit 5 — Working Professionally with Animals
Learning outcomes
- Describe the roles and career routes in the animal sector.
- Explain the requirements of operating an animal-related business.
- Explain the principles of animal-assisted intervention and the boundaries around it.
- Communicate professionally with clients, colleagues and the public.
Knowledge content
Career routes. Veterinary nursing, animal care and management, zookeeping, welfare and rescue, research technician roles, grooming, boarding and daycare, wildlife rehabilitation, training and behaviour, education and outreach. Entry requirements vary from experience-based to degree-level.
Operating a business. Licensing and inspection; public liability and employer's liability insurance; risk assessment; record keeping; enhanced DBS where working with children or vulnerable adults; safeguarding policy and a named lead; data protection where client records are held; and honest, evidenced marketing.
Animal-assisted intervention. Structured, purposeful, facilitated interaction with animals to support specified outcomes — emotional regulation, communication, confidence, engagement. It is experiential rather than talk-based, and sessions are structured, documented and outcome-focused.
Its boundaries matter as much as its content:
- It is not clinical treatment and does not replace therapy, medical care or specialist provision.
- Practitioners require appropriate qualification, insurance and clearance.
- Animal welfare constrains it absolutely. Session length, frequency and rest are set by what the animal can sustain, not by demand.
- An animal in this work must be suited to it by temperament, and must be able to withdraw.
Professional communication. Explaining welfare requirements to someone who does not want to hear them. Declining a sale. Handling a complaint. Giving honest cost information before a purchase. Knowing the limit of your competence and referring beyond it — particularly to a vet.
Practical task
Write a client-facing pre-purchase information sheet for one species, covering full lifetime cost, time commitment, lifespan, and the circumstances in which you would decline to sell.
Evidence task
Produce an operational plan for a small animal-related business: services, licensing and insurance required, welfare limits on delivery, safeguarding and record-keeping arrangements, and how you would evidence compliance at inspection.
Progression
From here, accredited routes include Level 3 Diplomas and Extended Diplomas in Animal Management, higher education in animal science or behaviour, and specific vocational qualifications in areas such as training, behaviour or animal-assisted intervention.
Each of those requires an accredited provider. This material prepares for them; it does not replace them.
Notes for the tutor
Level and scope. Written at Level 3 standard and assuming Level 2 knowledge. It covers the knowledge areas common to Level 3 Animal Management specifications but is not mapped to any awarding organisation's units, because it is not an accredited course.
The two disclaimers are load-bearing. The first, that this is not a regulated qualification. The second, in Unit 5, that describing animal-assisted intervention does not qualify anyone to practise it. Both should stay prominent, and both are more important at Level 3 than at Level 2, because the content is closer to professional practice and a learner may reasonably mistake it for training.
Unit 3 is deliberately unresolved. The ethical dilemmas do not have model answers, because they do not have answers. The assessable skill is transparent reasoning, and a well-argued position a tutor disagrees with is a strong piece of work.
Unit 4 requires care with a young or vulnerable learner. Breeding content includes euthanasia, failure to thrive and welfare-damaging morphs. It is honest rather than graphic, and it is worth knowing your learner before setting it.
Evidence tasks produce portfolio work of genuine professional value — a breeding plan, a compliance summary, a behaviour case study, an operational plan. For material that carries no certificate, that portfolio is the real output.
