This design is intentional. It means PawSteps complies with the UK GDPR principle of data minimisation โ we do not collect data we do not need. It also means that if you clear your browser data or switch devices, your progress will not transfer. This is a privacy feature, not a limitation.
The app itself collects no personal data. There is no account, no login, no name, no email address, and no tracking. All data stays on your device. The only exception is if you choose to subscribe to PawSteps Premium (see below).
| Data | Why we collect it | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Name and email address | To create and manage your account | Contract |
| Payment information | Handled by Stripe โ we never store card details | Contract |
| Subscription tier and billing history | To manage your subscription and comply with accounting rules | Contract / Legal obligation |
| Child profiles (names, ages) | If you create them โ to personalise the experience | Contract / Consent |
If you email, call, or message us, we collect your name, contact details, and the content of your message in order to respond. We retain these for up to 2 years.
For in-person animal-assisted therapy or school sessions (separate from the app), we collect fuller information including SEND details, medical needs, and EHCP information. This is covered by a separate registration form and Privacy Notice provided at booking. The POTG Compliance File (including Data Protection Policy and Records Retention Schedule) governs that processing.
PawSteps is designed for children aged 5โ18. We take the processing of children's data extremely seriously and follow the ICO's Children's Code (Age Appropriate Design Code).
Where a child is old enough to exercise their own data rights (generally age 13 under UK law), we take their wishes into account alongside those of their parent or carer.
SEND information, health conditions, and EHCP details are special category data under UK GDPR and carry the highest level of protection. We only process this information in the following circumstances:
We never require disclosure of SEND information to use PawSteps. Any such information shared with us voluntarily is treated with the strictest confidence.
PawSteps uses browser localStorage (not cookies) to save your progress and preferences locally on your device. This is different from tracking cookies โ it does not follow you across websites, it cannot be read by third parties, and it does not transmit any data to us or anyone else.
The PawSteps app contains no advertising, no analytics trackers, and no third-party scripts beyond the Google Fonts stylesheet (which loads the typeface used in the app). Google Fonts may log your IP address as part of the font delivery. We do not control this. If you prefer not to use Google Fonts, contact us and we can provide a version of the app with fonts bundled locally.
We do not sell personal data. We share it only where there is a lawful reason to do so:
| Data type | How long |
|---|---|
| App progress & settings | On your device, until you clear your browser data โ we never have a copy |
| Premium account records | Duration of subscription + 7 years (HMRC requirement) |
| Payment records | 7 years (HMRC) |
| Contact/enquiry messages | 2 years from last contact |
| In-person session records (children) | Until the child reaches age 25 |
| Safeguarding records | Until the child reaches age 25 or per statutory guidance |
Under UK data protection law you have the following rights. Where the data subject is a child, parents and carers normally exercise these rights:
To exercise any right, contact us using the details below. We will respond within one calendar month.
You may cancel your PawSteps subscription at any time through your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period โ you keep access until then and are not charged again. We do not charge a cancellation fee.
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you normally have 14 days to cancel a digital subscription for a full refund. However, when you start using PawSteps within those 14 days (which you can, immediately), you acknowledge that the service has begun and you waive the right to a full cooling-off refund for the period already used. You may still cancel to prevent future charges.
In plain English: if you use it, you pay for the time you used it. Cancelling before the next billing date stops future charges but does not refund the current period already enjoyed.
If you signed up with a 7-day free trial, no charge is made during the trial period. You can cancel at any time during the trial with no charge whatsoever.
If you experience a technical fault that prevented you from accessing the service during a paid period, contact us within 14 days and we will consider a partial refund on a case-by-case basis.

We protect data using technical and organisational measures including:
No system is 100% secure. If a breach occurs that is likely to affect your rights, we will notify you and the ICO within 72 hours as required by UK GDPR.
We review this policy at least annually and update it whenever our practices or the law changes. The version and date are shown at the top. If we make a material change that affects you, we will notify you by email (if you have an account) or by a notice in the app.
If you have any question or concern about how we handle your data, please contact us first โ we will do our best to put it right.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at any time:
