- preparation before starting an accredited course,
- supporting material alongside one,
- structured knowledge for someone working or volunteering with animals,
- a foundation for the Level 3 material that follows.
What it is not. It is not veterinary training and it does not qualify anyone to diagnose or treat an animal. Where a unit describes signs of illness, the correct response is always to contact a vet.

Unit 1 — Animal Health and Welfare
Learning outcomes
By the end of this unit you will be able to:
- State the five welfare needs and explain what each requires in practice.
- Describe signs of good health in a range of species.
- Recognise common signs that an animal is unwell.
- Explain the legal duty of care owed to an animal in your keeping.
Knowledge content
The five welfare needs. Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 anyone responsible for an animal must meet its need for: a suitable environment; a suitable diet; the ability to exhibit normal behaviour patterns; appropriate housing with, or apart from, other animals; and protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
These are legal duties, not aspirations. Failing to meet them is an offence whether or not the animal has visibly suffered.
What good health looks like. It differs by species, which is why a keeper must know the normal for each animal individually:
- Mammals — clear bright eyes, clean nose, good coat or spine condition, alert posture, normal appetite, normal droppings, steady weight.
- Birds — smooth feathering, clear nostrils, active and vocal, gripping perch firmly, droppings of normal consistency.
- Reptiles — clear eyes, clean vent, good body condition, complete sheds, using the thermal gradient appropriately.
- Amphibians — moist unbroken skin, clear eyes, responsive to movement.
- Invertebrates — moving normally, feeding, moulting successfully.
Signs an animal may be unwell. Weight loss; changes in appetite or drinking; lethargy or hiding more than usual; discharge from eyes, nose or vent; laboured breathing; changes in droppings; incomplete shed in reptiles; a bird sitting fluffed at the bottom of the cage.
Prey species hide illness. Rabbits, guinea pigs, small rodents, reptiles and birds all conceal symptoms, because in the wild an animal that looks ill is the one that gets taken. By the time a prey species looks obviously unwell, it is often seriously so. This is why routine observation and records matter more for these species than for a dog or a cat.
Practical task
Take one species. Write its normal parameters: expected weight range, normal appetite, normal droppings, activity pattern, and three signs that would concern you. Then find the same information from a second source and note where they differ.
Evidence task
Keep a health observation record for one animal, or one species from the care guides, over two weeks. Record date, weight if available, appetite, activity, and anything unusual. Write a short conclusion on what the record shows and what you would do next.
Unit 2 — Animal Accommodation
Learning outcomes
- Describe the accommodation requirements of a range of species.
- Explain how temperature, humidity, lighting and ventilation are controlled and why each matters.
- Explain the role of enrichment.
- Assess an enclosure against the needs of its occupant.
Knowledge content
Space and layout. Enclosure size is a minimum, not a target. What matters as much is whether the space is usable by that species — an arboreal animal needs height and climbing structure, a burrowing animal needs depth of substrate, a ground-dwelling animal needs floor area.
Temperature and the thermal gradient. Ectothermic animals cannot generate body heat and regulate by moving between warmer and cooler areas. An enclosure at one uniform temperature, however correct that temperature is, removes the animal's ability to regulate. A gradient is not optional.
Heat sources are not interchangeable. Radiant heat from above suits basking species. Conducted belly heat suits species that live under things. Providing the wrong type can result in an animal failing to recognise it is warm enough and sustaining burns.
Humidity. Species-specific and frequently got wrong. Too low causes incomplete shedding in reptiles and dehydration in amphibians; too high causes respiratory disease and skin infection. Measure it rather than guessing.
Lighting and UVB. Many reptiles require UVB to synthesise vitamin D3 and absorb calcium. Without it they develop metabolic bone disease, which is painful, disabling and preventable. UVB output falls long before a lamp stops emitting visible light, so lamps must be replaced on schedule, not when they fail.
Ventilation. Stagnant air causes respiratory problems and mould. Ventilation is balanced against humidity — solving one often worsens the other, and the correct answer is species-dependent.
Enrichment. Providing opportunity for natural behaviour: climbing structure, hides, foraging opportunity, digging substrate, varied textures. Enrichment is a welfare need under the Act, not an enhancement.
This is a good example of why accommodation must match the species and not the keeper's expectations.
Practical task
Choose a species. Specify its enclosure completely: dimensions, substrate, heat source and type, temperature gradient, humidity range, lighting including UVB, ventilation, hides, and enrichment. Justify each choice.
Evidence task
Assess a real enclosure — your own, a photograph, or one from the care guides — against the specification you wrote. Identify what meets the need, what does not, and what you would change first and why.
Unit 3 — Animal Feeding and Nutrition
Learning outcomes
- Describe the dietary requirements of herbivores, carnivores, omnivores and insectivores.
- Explain the function of the main nutrient groups.
- Explain supplementation and why it is needed in captivity.
- Calculate feeding quantities and costs.
Knowledge content
Feeding categories. Herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, insectivore, frugivore. The category determines gut anatomy as well as diet, which is why feeding outside it causes disease rather than just poor condition.
Nutrient groups. Protein for growth and repair; carbohydrates and fats for energy; vitamins and minerals for body processes; water, which is required in larger quantity than anything else and is most often overlooked.
Supplementation. Captive diets rarely match wild ones. Insectivorous reptiles are commonly fed insects that are low in calcium relative to phosphorus, so calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation is standard practice. Gut-loading — feeding the insects a nutritious diet before offering them — improves the food itself rather than dusting the outside of it.
Feeding practice. Frequency varies enormously: some snakes feed weekly or less; a small insectivorous mammal eats daily and cannot safely fast. Growing, pregnant, lactating and elderly animals have different requirements again.
Obesity is a welfare problem. It is common in captivity, it is caused by the keeper, and it shortens life. Body condition scoring is more reliable than weight alone, because it accounts for size.
Cost. Feeding is the largest recurring cost of keeping most animals and the one people most underestimate. Calculating it honestly before acquiring an animal is part of responsible keeping.
Practical task
For one species, produce a weekly feeding plan: what, how much, how often, what supplementation, and how you would adjust it for a growing or elderly animal.
Evidence task
Calculate the annual feeding cost for one animal, showing your working. Compare it to the purchase price of that animal and write a short comment on what the comparison shows.
Unit 4 — Animal Handling and Restraint
Learning outcomes
- Explain why safe handling protects both animal and handler.
- Describe appropriate handling techniques for a range of species.
- Recognise signs of stress and respond appropriately.
- Explain when an animal should not be handled.
Knowledge content
Two reasons for correct handling. The animal's welfare, and the handler's safety. An animal that is handled badly is stressed, may be injured, and learns to associate people with fear — which makes every future handling harder.
Before you pick anything up. Know the species. Know that individual. Know why you are handling it. Know where you will put it down. Handling without a purpose is not neutral for the animal.
By group, in principle:
- Small mammals — support the whole body, never lift by scruff alone unless species-appropriate and never by the tail. Keep close to a surface.
- Birds — restrain without restricting the chest, as birds need chest movement to breathe. Never squeeze the body.
- Snakes — support the body along its length. Never let the whole weight hang from one point.
- Lizards — support the body and limbs. Never grasp the tail; many species autotomise, shedding it to escape.
- Tortoises — support the whole shell from beneath with both hands. They are heavier and more fragile than they look.
- Amphibians — minimise handling entirely. Where necessary, hands must be wet and free of any residue, because the skin is permeable.
- Invertebrates — most are better encouraged to walk onto a hand or container than picked up. Many are fragile and some can inflict injury.
Signs of stress. Species-specific and must be learned per animal. Colour change in chameleons; balling or huffing in hedgehogs; feather position and posture in birds; gaping, hissing or attempting to flee in reptiles; freezing; refusing food afterwards.
When not to handle. During shedding; after feeding; when gravid or in season; when unwell; during acclimatisation to a new environment; when the animal is asleep at a time it should be; and whenever it has already indicated it has had enough.
Practical task
For three species from different groups, write a handling procedure: preparation, technique, duration, stress signs to watch for, and circumstances in which you would not handle.
Evidence task
Write a short reflective account of a handling session — your own, or observed. What went well, what stress signals appeared, and what you would do differently.
Unit 5 — Health, Safety and Hygiene in Animal Settings
Learning outcomes
- Explain the main hazards in an animal setting and how they are controlled.
- Describe hygiene procedures and explain their purpose.
- Explain what zoonoses are and how transmission is prevented.
- Complete a basic risk assessment.
Knowledge content
Main hazards. Bites, scratches and stings; zoonotic infection; manual handling injury; slips and trips; electrical equipment near water; chemical exposure from cleaning products; allergens including hay, bedding and dander.
Hygiene. Handwashing before and after contact, and between animals. Separate equipment per enclosure or thorough disinfection between uses. Correct dilution of disinfectant — too weak fails to kill, too strong risks harming the animal. Correct contact time, which is the step most often skipped. Safe waste disposal.
Zoonoses. Diseases transmissible from animals to humans. Salmonella is the most relevant to reptile and amphibian keeping and is why handwashing after contact is not optional. Others include ringworm, psittacosis in birds, and various parasites. Children, elderly people, pregnant people and anyone immunocompromised are at higher risk, which affects how sessions with those groups are run.
Risk assessment. Identify the hazard; identify who might be harmed and how; evaluate the risk and decide on control measures; record the findings; review. Recorded and reviewed, not written once and filed.
Legal context. Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974; COSHH for cleaning chemicals; and the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Settings offering animal experiences to the public require an Animal Activities Licence from the local authority and appropriate public liability insurance.
Practical task
Complete a risk assessment for one activity — cleaning an enclosure, or a handling session with a group. Use the five-step structure above.
Evidence task
Write a hygiene procedure for a setting with mixed species, covering handwashing, equipment, disinfection with contact times, waste, and what changes when a vulnerable visitor group is present.

Notes for the tutor
Level and scope. Written at Level 2 standard, covering the knowledge areas common to Level 2 Animal Care and Animal Management specifications. It is not mapped to a specific awarding organisation's units, because it is not an accredited course.
The disclaimer at the top is load-bearing. "Level 2 Animal Management" reads to most people as a regulated qualification. Stating plainly that it is not, before anything else, is what makes the rest of the material safe to publish.
Veterinary boundary. Every unit that touches health directs the learner to a vet. That boundary is stated in the opening notice and should be reinforced whenever a learner asks a clinical question.
Evidence tasks are written to produce portfolio-usable work — a record, an assessment, a calculation, a procedure, a reflective account. A learner completing all five has something concrete to show a college or employer, which is the honest benefit of material that carries no certificate.
