This is the qualification most people working with animals actually hold. It is also, unusually, one where the assessment and the job are the same thing — an assessor watching you handle an animal is watching you do the work.

Part 1 — The five welfare needs

The Animal Welfare Act 2006 places a legal duty of care on anyone responsible for an animal. It is not enough to avoid cruelty — you must actively provide for five needs.

It is not "animals should live with others." It is appropriate company.

A rabbit kept alone is a welfare failure — rabbits are social and isolation causes chronic stress.

Two adult African pygmy hedgehogs kept together is also a welfare failure — they are solitary, and cohabiting causes fighting, food competition and weight loss in the subordinate animal.

Same need. Opposite housing. The species decides.

Licensing in practice

An Animal Activity Licence is issued by the local authority and requires:

Licences are star-rated from 1 to 5 based on welfare standards and risk. A higher rating means a longer licence period and fewer inspections.

Why this matters in assessment

Vocational assessors do not want the Act quoted at them. They want to see it applied.

"We house hedgehogs individually because the Animal Welfare Act requires appropriate company, and this species is solitary."

That is worth more than reciting all five needs from memory.

Part 3 — Daily health checks

A health check is a systematic examination performed the same way every time, so that changes are noticed.

Body condition scoring

Most species use a 1 to 5 scale:

💡 Why weight trend beats weight

A single weight tells you very little. A hedgehog at 380 g might be fine or might be in trouble.

A hedgehog that was 420 g last week and is 380 g today has lost 9.5% of its body mass in seven days. That is an emergency.

Weigh at the same time of day, on the same scales, and record every time. The record is what makes the number useful.

Calculating percentage weight change

Percentage change = (change ÷ original weight) × 100

Worked example. A rabbit weighed 2.4 kg. It now weighs 2.16 kg.

Change = 2.4 − 2.16 = 0.24 kg
(0.24 ÷ 2.4) × 100 = 10% loss

A loss of 10% or more requires veterinary attention.

⚠️ Prey species hide illness

A rabbit, guinea pig or hedgehog that looks unwell has usually been unwell for some time.

Prey animals conceal weakness because in the wild, showing it means being eaten. By the time symptoms are obvious, the condition is advanced.

This is exactly why daily checks and weight records matter. They catch what observation alone will not.

Vocational assessment is less about knowing what a condition is called and more about recognising that something is wrong and escalating appropriately.

"I don't know what this is, but it wasn't like this yesterday, and I've called the vet" is a correct and professional response.

Part 5 — Nutrition

Why a rabbit must have hay

Rabbits are hindgut fermenters. Fibre keeps the gut moving; without it, gut motility slows and stops — gut stasis, which is fatal if untreated.

Fibre also wears down the continuously growing incisors and molars. Without it, teeth overgrow and cause pain, abscesses and starvation.

Hay should be 85% of a rabbit's diet. Pellets are a supplement, not a meal. This is the single most common welfare failure in pet rabbits, and it comes from feeding them what looks like food to a human.

Calculating feed

Worked example. A hedgehog requires 25 g of dry food per kilogram of body weight per day. The hedgehog weighs 380 g.

380 g = 0.38 kg
0.38 × 25 = 9.5 g per day

Worked example. A rabbit requires 25 g of pellets per kilogram of body weight per day, plus unlimited hay. The rabbit weighs 2.4 kg.

2.4 × 25 = 60 g of pellets per day

Part 6 — Accommodation

Thermal gradients

Reptiles are ectothermic — they cannot generate body heat and must move between temperatures to regulate.

An enclosure must therefore provide a gradient, not a single temperature:

Bearded dragon: basking 38–42°C at one end, cool end 22–26°C.

If the whole enclosure is 40°C, the animal cannot cool down and will overheat.

Always thermostat-controlled. An unregulated heat source is a fire risk and a welfare risk.

Calculating stocking density

Worked example. A room measures 8 m × 4 m. Guidance requires 2.5 m² per person.

Area = 8 × 4 = 32 m²
32 ÷ 2.5 = 12.8 → 12 people maximum

Round down. Rounding up exceeds the safe limit.

Part 7 — Biosecurity and infection control

Biosecurity means the measures taken to prevent disease entering, spreading within, or leaving a collection.

Zoonoses

A zoonosis is a disease transmissible from animals to humans.

⚠️ The reptile point that matters most

Reptiles carry Salmonella naturally and show no signs of illness. A healthy-looking bearded dragon may be shedding it.

Hand sanitiser is not sufficient after reptile contact. Alcohol gel is unreliable against Salmonella. Soap and warm running water, properly, for twenty seconds.

Higher-risk groups — under-fives, pregnant people, immunosuppressed people — need this stated explicitly, not assumed.

Part 8 — Handling and restraint

Principles

  1. Only handle when there is a reason. Handling is a stressor.
  2. Approach calmly and predictably. Slow movements, quiet voice, approach from the side.
  3. Support the whole body. Never lift by scruff, ears, tail or a limb.
  4. Restrain only as much as necessary. Over-restraint increases struggling.
  5. Keep it short. Return the animal before it becomes distressed.
  6. Recognise when to stop. An escalating animal is telling you something.

The welfare principle underneath all of it

The animal's response tells you whether you are doing it correctly.

An animal that struggles, vocalises, freezes rigidly or attempts to escape is not being handled well, whatever the technique looked like.

An assessor is watching the animal as much as the handler.

Part 9 — Behaviour and recognising stress

The Rabbit Grimace Scale

A validated tool for assessing pain in rabbits, based on orbital tightening, cheek flattening, nostril shape, whisker position and ear position.

It exists because rabbits do not vocalise pain and were routinely under-treated as a result. Worth knowing that a formal method exists — it is a strong point in an assessment.

Enrichment

Enrichment allows animals to perform natural behaviours. Assessors look for it.

Records are a legal requirement under licensing, and they are the evidence that welfare has been provided.

Why records are worth more than they look

Legally, they prove compliance at inspection.

Clinically, they show trends no single observation reveals — a weight drifting down over three weeks is invisible day to day and obvious on a chart.

Practically, they let a vet see the history rather than a snapshot.

In assessment, they are often the difference between a pass and a distinction. Two candidates may handle equally well; the one with complete records demonstrates professional practice.

The mistakes that cost marks

Reciting the five needs without applying them. Assessors want the need identified and linked to the species.

Saying animals should be housed together. The need is appropriate company. Species decides.

Confusing stress signals with pain signals. Stress is usually active; pain is usually passive.

Forgetting that hand sanitiser is insufficient for reptiles. Named specifically in most specifications.

Giving a single weight without a trend. The record is what makes the number meaningful.

Rounding stocking density up. Always down.

Naming a condition without saying what to do. Recognising and escalating is the assessed skill.

Teaching and assessment notes

This qualification is assessed largely by observation. Written knowledge matters, but an assessor watching a candidate handle an animal is watching the animal as much as the handler. A technically correct hold that leaves the animal struggling is not a pass.

Records are the most reliable route to a distinction. Two candidates may handle equally well; the one who can produce a complete weight chart, feeding log and cleaning record is demonstrating professional practice rather than competence alone.

Teach the reasoning, not the rules. A candidate who knows a rabbit needs hay has learned a fact. One who knows why — hindgut fermentation and continuously growing teeth — can work out what an unfamiliar species needs, which is what the job actually requires.

The prey-species point should be taught early and returned to often. It explains why daily checks exist, why weight records matter, why a subtle behaviour change is significant, and why "he looked fine yesterday" is not reassurance.

Species comparison is the most efficient way to teach welfare. Rabbits must be housed in pairs; hedgehogs must be housed alone. Same legislation, same welfare need, opposite conclusion. A candidate who understands that has understood the Act.
